Whether you have just moved and are working with a blank canvas or wanting to update your bedroom, finding your signature home decor aesthetic is daunting. The possibilities of colour palettes, textures, fabrics, furnishings are overwhelming. And if you are like most and don’t know the difference from your mid-century to your, well… just modern, don’t stress, we are breaking it down with our 7 top tips for choosing your home decor.

Interior design for some is a creative past-time; for some, it’s their legitimate career, and in a digital world where we can see the homes of everyone, there is a lot of pressure on you when you are designing and decorating your space.

Whilst shopping for Home wall art, paint and wallpaper sound easy, the endless possibilities and question of how it will look when it all comes together can be a challenge, especially with wanting it to be something that is not only a reflection of you and your personality but also something that you are proud of and somewhere that’s inviting and relaxing to you.

Here are our top 5 tips on ways you can help yourself find ways to decorate your home:

Do Your Homework

When looking for a specific vibe for your home or even a piece of furniture, it is important to know what it is you’re looking for is classed as.

For example, knowing that you want an armchair for your living room is an easy google search, and it will provide you with thousands of options. However, to help you save time, do your research. Learn the difference between modern and traditional; this will ultimately help you narrow your search to find your style of furniture that speaks to you.

We’re not saying you have to stick to one style of furniture, but knowing what pieces you like from each era or vibe will help you find the furniture you love quickly and efficiently.

Pinterest Is Your New Best Friend

Pinterest is a fantastic app for when you are short of inspiration. The app is a designer's dream and is widely used professionally from interior design too.

The volume of inspiration is endless, however, our tip is that you make a board of each room that you plan to design and then pin items or pictures of the inspiration you like to that individual board; that way, you have a clear, concise vision for your entire home. Not every room has to have the same vibe, so explore and see what you like or even repeat designs and incorporate the same elements and see what works together in each room for a more cohesive template.

Ask Yourself “What Do I Want This Room To Be?”

When designing, it can be easy to get caught up in what looks pretty where. However, it is important to put intention behind your design. Whilst you should think of the practicality of a space and how everything should work, e.g. table too big, or sofa too small. It is also important to think of the intention of the room and its purpose.

If your living room is the place you go to relax and watch TV in the evening, then think about the TV position in ratio with the chairs and sofa. If your living room is the place you go to host guests and parties and entertain, you will want to ensure that there is an opportunity for conversation and that the sofas and chair facilitate that by facing each other.

Thinking about what you wish to use that room for and how you wish to live in that space will help you decide what goes where and the colour options and mood of the room.

Make Your Art Personal

Art is about self-expression, so when picking home artwork for your home, ensure that you choose pieces that you not only love but may have a deeper meaning to you.

Choose art of a place you love or have happy memories or a mantra or quotation that makes you smile. It will not only invoke joy for you each day, but it will set the mood of the room as well as decorate the space nicely.

Don’t be scared of only picking one piece per room. There are no rules when it comes to art, so don’t be afraid to choose multiple pieces and create your own gallery.

Don’t Rush It

Don’t feel the need to have a fully conceptualised vision for your home as soon as you move in. That’s not only unrealistic, but it’s also stress (and expenditure) you don’t need!

If this is the first space you’ve had full creative control over, you don’t need to have your style figured out straight away. Buy the essentials, a bed, some chairs and then go from there. Your style and taste will be ever-evolving, so pick key pieces that speak to you, and wait till you find the wall colour you love or the rug of your dreams.

If anyone questions it in the meantime, just say you are going for the minimalistic style and mind their own business.
