Unless you are fortunate enough to have a massive double garage, you might find over time that there is less and less usable space in your garage. It doesn’t take much to fill up smaller garages with boxes and unused items from your home, leaving less room to walk around, park your car inside, or put more stuff away.

Even if your garage is on the smaller side, there are still several things that you can do in order to transform it into a more usable space. With the right planning and organisational tactics, you can get your garage in order so that you can increase how much usuable space you have.

If you are looking to take your garage from a simple storage space that seems to accumulate clutter to space that you can actually use on a regular basis, whether this is a place to work, chill out, or work on your hobby, here are a few tips to help you get started.

Free Up More Square Footage

You might think that you have tapped into every inch of space possible in your garage already, but there is actually some square footage that you might not have yet accessed. For instance, if you have to keep a foot or more free towards the front of your garage so that you can access and open the garage door, you are unnecessarily wasting space.

Consider swapping out your traditional garage door for roller doors that can be electrically operated. Doors like these are incredibly efficient when it comes to saving space as you don’t need to keep any floor space clear at the base in order to open and close it. You can also reclaim some headspace as well with this style of door.

Once you have addressed any issues with your garage door, you should look to rearrange any cabinets and storage units to the best advantage. It might very well be worth consolidating your storage by stacking shelves and installing upper cupboards. Wall storage that is built into the garage can give you much more floor space to work with than you had initially.

With the right configuration, you can reclaim a great deal of square footage in your garage.

Insulate the Space

Now that you have freed up as much space as possible, you will want to address any issues with the internal climate of your garage. You don’t want to put all of this work into creating usable space only to have everything you put in your garage damaged by a damp environment.

There are several approaches that you can take to insulating your garage. The option that you choose will depend on the type of structure you are working with. If your garage is simply constructed out of brick and mortar, you can apply an insulating substance similar to the way in which you would paint a wall. There are also fiberglass, foil, and foam options to consider as well. Bear in mind that some forms of insulation take up more space than others.
