The landscape of gaming is shifting, and it’s no longer dominated by the younger crowd. Older generations are spending more time playing games than ever before. It's not just about keeping up with kids (or grandkids) – gaming is a genuine hobby for many older adults.

A new wave, an old wave, or both?

With the rise of mobile games, online platforms, and accessible tech, older adults are taking to video games in surprising numbers. According to research by AARP, about 45% of older adults (50+) said they played games in 2022. Their gaming preferences often lean toward more casual and relaxing experiences, although this doesn’t account for everyone.

One of the big reasons older generations are becoming gamers is accessibility. The rise of smartphones and tablets has put gaming into the hands of nearly everyone. You don’t need to master complicated controls to enjoy a game. Mobile games are simple to pick up while offering engaging gameplay, which appeals to older adults who may not want the hassle of learning tricky mechanics.

But is it just newcomers who add up to that high percentage of older gamers? Many gamers who grew up in the 70s, 80s and 90s with consoles like Atari, Nintendo’s NES and SNES, and the original PlayStation are now playing modern equivalents – as well as mobile games.

Relaxing entertainment

For many older gamers, it’s about enjoying some downtime. Puzzle games, word games, and card games are popular choices. Titles like Words with Friends, Upwords, and Sudoku are beloved by older players. These games offer entertainment without stress and offer a satisfying sense of accomplishment.

Beyond mobile

While mobile games are a huge entry point, older adults also play console games which can offer an immersive escape, a mental workout, or even a creative outlet. The Animal Crossing series, for example, has attracted millions of players across all age groups. These cosy, slow-paced games allow players to slowly design their islands or tend to their gardens. You can play at your own pace, and set your own goals, and there’s no pressure to “win” in the traditional sense.

More action-packed, adventure-based games like The Legend of Zelda series and Skyrim have a dedicated older fanbase. These games provide freedom, exploration, and a sense of adventure that can be appealing to those wanting to stay mentally active. Meanwhile, the rise of multiplayer games where older players can join their kids and grandkids in fun virtual worlds makes the generational gap feel a little smaller. Nintendo’s Wii console played a significant role in encouraging communal and family gaming.

Cognitive benefits

Gaming has proven cognitive benefits for older adults. Studies have shown that playing video games can help with memory, problem-solving skills, and mental agility. As we age, staying mentally sharp is crucial for maintaining quality of life. Games that require strategic thinking, such as puzzle and strategy games, and those that call for quick reactions help to keep the mind engaged and alert.

Some older gamers enjoy mentally stimulating games like Brain Age or Lumosity. These games are specifically designed to exercise the brain and offer both entertainment and health benefits. These games offer a workout for the mind in a way that’s engaging and fun.

The role of online casinos

Online casinos have also had a significant impact on older generations and gaming. The shift to digital casinos has made the gambling experience more accessible and convenient than ever before. Many traditional casino and card games like blackjack, poker, and roulette are available online and on mobile. Affiliate sites mean we see online casino reviews provided by Casino.org and other websites, highlighting platforms with easy-to-use interfaces and a variety of classic games, as a way to make the industry more transparent, and to provide knowledge and information to customers. This has helped older generations engage with online casinos, as they have easy access to trusted sources and reviews.

Nostalgia meets new technology

Part of the allure of gaming stems from nostalgia. The resurgence of retro games gives players a chance to relive their youth. Re-releases of classic titles like Pac-Man, Super Mario, and the original Tetris offer an opportunity to reconnect with past favourites while taking advantage of modern technology. Two Mario games, a remake of Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros. Wonder were ranked among IGN’s best-reviewed games of 2023.

Many older adults are returning to the games they grew up with using platforms like emulators or mini retro consoles, such as the NES Classic. Recapturing that feeling of being in front of a pixelated screen, joystick in hand, is a big motivator for some older gamers. Much of the Microsoft Store for Xbox games is made up of retro arcade-style games and 2D platformers.

Connecting through games

One aspect of gaming that's sometimes overlooked is the social connection it offers. For some older adults, isolation is a real issue and staying socially active becomes more important. Games offer a fun way to keep relationships going. Many mobile games encourage light competition or collaboration with friends and family, which can strengthen connections. Wordle and other games that encouraged friendly competition (such as Wordle-inspired music and geography alternatives) became particularly popular during the pandemic.

Platforms like Facebook Gaming and Twitch offer live streams where gamers can watch others play, take part in conversations, and bond with other gaming enthusiasts. Some older gamers start streaming themselves, proving that gaming can bridge age gaps and create spaces for shared experiences.
