One of the favourite styles of wine is its smoothness

46% of UK wine lovers say ‘smoothness’ is key when selecting a wine

What do you look for when choosing a wine?

Chances are that you will be looking for smoothness! According to a survey carried out by top-selling Californian wine brand Apothic, almost 50% of us consider smoothness key when selecting a wine.

When adults in the UK were asked for their favourite style of wine it was surprisingly smooth wines that came out on top:

41% of UK wine drinkers prefer Smooth wines, to those described as Fresh and Crisp (27%) or Rich and Oaky wines (12%)

Researchers delved deeper to identify what factors influence wine lovers to purchase the wines that they do, from packaging to peer recommendations. Again, remarkably consumers pointed to smoothness in wine as a key thing they look for when selecting a bottle, with 46 % of consumers indicating a smooth palate was essential to them when selecting a wine, second only to the price of the wine (65%). Smoothness was valued even higher among 18-24-year olds, with 48% of this age group pointing to this style as a key consideration when choosing wine.

Results that make sense to wine expert and tv host Aidy Smith: “If you’re looking for something that is most likely to please everyone, smooth wines should be your go to! Tannin can be too heavy for some people, acidity too zippy, but smoothness ticks all the right boxes, and particularly when it’s around that £10 price point as Apothic Cab is, it’s an easy choice for UK wine lovers.”  Consumer demand for smooth wines is a good sign for Californian producer Apothic who launched their first varietal wine this autumn, Apothic Cab, which has been recognised as one of the smoothest Cabernet Sauvignons on the market.

Made from exceptional quality fruit grown under the warmth of the California sun, it is this succulently ripe fruit that leads to such silkiness in the wine. Apothic Cab is bolstered by rich flavours of dark forest fruit, classic for well-crafted Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes of jammy dark fruit are joined by aromas of toasted oak and vanilla which boldly linger on the palate.
