1. Don't beat yourself up if you slip into old habits

We all have our human weaknesses and for the most part, we shouldn't beat ourselves up about them. That said, don't let slipping into old habits be a reason you don't meet your weight loss goal.

2. Adopt an easy-to-follow 30-day plan

Think of your diet resolution as a 30-day journey rather than a one time event. Start by creating a meal plan that is easy to follow, and that allows you to eat the foods you love but in smaller portions so that there's not too much of it!

3. Plan your meals ahead of time

Figure out the most important meals of the day, so that you know what to put in your freezer. Make sure you're eating regularly throughout a 24 hour period, and that your daily caloric intake is within a range that will help you get to your goal weight. If losing weight is important to you, then this is also the time to start paying attention to how much you eat at each meal.

4. Take it slow! Progress not perfection

In any endeavor there are times when we need to step back and take a breathing room from our commitments. It doesn't mean that our resolutions are worthless or that we're not going anywhere – it just means we're taking things slower than we'd prefer.

5. Stay patient
