The Used Sports Equipment That Can Make You the Most Money

Even though a lot of people invested in sports equipment during the pandemic, a recent study showed that there is a staggering £1.5 billion of unused sporting equipment in Britain.

Intrigued by that statistic, experts at Golfsupport.com (https://golfsupport.com/) decided to find out the sports equipment items that can make people the most money when resold.

This was achieved by creating a seed list of 123 common pieces of sports equipment and scraping 81,000 eBay listings to collect the mean selling price for each item, ultimately discovering the sporting equipment with the highest resale value.

Here are the sports equipment items that can make you the most money, ranked…

Topping the table as the most valuable sporting equipment to resell is racing bikes with a mean average eBay sold price of £217.15. The reason racing bikes pips mountain bikes to top spot is that they cost more compared to their mountain bike counterparts. This translates down into their resale values.

In second place is mountain bikes, reselling at a mean average of £206.06. This is unsurprising as they are the most popular bike to own by adults, with 33% of cyclists currently owning one, which creates a great demand for them on the second-hand market

Third place goes to rowing machines with a mean average of £199.86. Rowing machines are inherently very expensive when bought new and are built to last, so it's easy to see why they resell for so much.

Following are treadmills (mean resale price of £164.91) and motorbike racing suits (mean resale price of £105.40) respectively ranking fourth and fifth.

And the sporting equipment that can make you the least amount of money is…

Having a mean resale price of just £3.48 (£213.67 less than racing bikes in first place), golf tees rank last in the study.

Golfsupport.com’s exclusive tips for getting the most money for your sporting equipment

  1. Keep the original packaging if possible and appropriate, as this will help to identify which edition the equipment is and its age. Furthermore, some people only purchase an item if it comes with its original packaging for added value and authenticity.
  2. If your equipment is rare, limited, or expensive to begin with, keep it in the best condition possible by boxing it away carefully or keeping it out of sight of children.
  3. Don’t settle for the first offer you receive. There are various online selling sites which could offer you more - shop around!
  4. Even if your equipment isn't in full working order, there are still ways to sell it. Parts are often still valuable alone and, if economical, it might be worth repairing the item and then selling it.
  5. And most importantly… DON’T SELL TOO SOON! Consider the seasonality of your sports item and wait for the right time of year to sell. The start of the sporting season is often the best time to sell for maximum profit.
