Finding the right animal companion for you and your family is a big decision that can be so rewarding when you’ve given it proper thought. Children are universally fascinated by animals and there is a mountain of research that shows that they have many health benefits for our little ones.

The right company for your family will very much depend on who you are as people and whether you can accommodate the needs of the animal. Here are some of the best family animals you should consider adopting:

Dog

Dogs have long been known as man’s best friend and there is good reason for that. They teach children of all ages patience, compassion, and responsibility while being the best playmates they could ask for. They need a lot of attention to keep them healthy and happy though, in the form of regular feedings, walks, and vet visits.

There are plenty of family-friendly dog breeds, including the giant Bernese Mountain Dog and toy-sized King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.

Cat

If you’re more of a cat person than a dog person, you’ll be happy to know that felines also make excellent company. Most cats are quieter than dogs and considerably more independent as they essentially clean themselves and require little training.

Despite their aloof reputation, cats are known to make close bonds with their owners and can be super cuddly when they want to be.

Rabbit

For a more low-key and gentle animal company, rabbits are the perfect choice. Though quiet, these little guys are highly social and love interacting with their owners and children. Rabbits are, however, quite fragile so younger children should be taught to handle them with respect and care.

To keep your rabbit healthy and strong, it is essential to provide them with shelter and a large run so they can stretch their legs. Their diet is made up primarily of dried grass so you should always be stocked up on feeding hay for rabbits and other small animals, as well as a small amount of leafy greens.

Fish

Fish are famously starter animals for many families but they should be given more credit than that. Not only are they low-maintenance and low-cost, but they are also playful and quiet companions that come in all kinds of vibrant colours and sizes.

In the hands of a knowledgeable carer, fish can thrive in both pond and tank settings while providing an ideal opportunity for children to learn about animal care and responsibility.

Hamsters

These furry friends are great first-time companions for children, provided that their owners understand what they need to be healthy and happy. Most hamsters are solidarity animals, which means you don’t need to get more than one and are relatively low maintenance.

Hamsters are naturally playful and curious so need an environment that they can explore and stimulate them.
