Does wearing a white shirt help performance at school?

Schoolkids who wear bright white shirts likely to perform better at school

As children prepare to return to school this week and next, new claims suggest that those who do so wearing bright white shirts have a distinct advantage.

With a third of Britons already back in the office and thousands of school children returning to the classroom, leading laundry expert Dr Beckmann has revealed that pupils have a better chance of successful schooldays if they have bright white shirts compared to other colours.

The cleaning brand teamed up with regular This Morning TV psychologist Emma Kenny to explain why a crisp white shirt is more beneficial to successful school days.

Emma Kenny said: “The association that people tend to have with white shirts seems to be that the wearer is more professional, and successful than those not wearing such attire, meaning that when they dress in such clothes it improves their performance.

“Whether you are a child attending school, a professional working in a busy office, or a CEO running your own business empire, you will be able to recognise the difference you feel wearing a bright white shirt, over a crumpled, or stained one.

“Taking intentional command of how you dress and present is a good step in empowering yourself, and leads to a higher likelihood of accomplishing your goals, and living a more successful educational and career life, all whilst looking sharp.”

And it seems parents of schoolchildren are already cottoning on to the fact that a bright white shirt spells more successful school days for their youngsters.

Bolton-based cleaning manufacturer Dr Beckmann has seen a sharp 29% rise in sales of its best-selling clothes whitening product Glowhite in the last two months, as parents and office workers look to ensure clothes are refreshed and ready for autumn after a turbulent six months at home.

Emma Kenny explains why wearing crisp white clothing can boost performance in both the classroom or the office.

She said: “Professional dress, one study* found, increases abstract thinking and gives people a broader perspective. So that crisp white shirt you look so good in is also contributing towards switching on your creativity button, making you more successful in your educational, or career endeavours.

“A crisp, clean uniform can be so influential that scientists found students performed better when wearing a smart white lab coat, than without. Simply believing that these kinds of clothes are worn by intelligent people made them score higher on their tests.”

On helping Brits to get ready to return to the classroom or office desk, Dr Beckmann spokesperson Susan Fermor said: “It has been an extraordinary time for the country over the past few months. Our normal routines have been thrown out of the window and we’ve all had to adapt to a new way of working.

“It will be good to get back to a sense of normality when schools re-open and we start to return to the office.

“And, as Emma Kenny has revealed, looking smart and ensuring clothes are the brightest has a real impact on how we all perform whether that be behind an office or school desk.”
