This time of year our skin can lose its summery glow, becoming dry and flaky as we struggle to combat the conditions. In fact, a recent study by Scandinavian health and beauty brand New Nordic shows 82% struggle with extremely dry skin in winter months.

Average low temperatures of two degrees coupled with battling sharp winds make it hard to protect our complexion and that can leave many feeling down in the dumps. According to Google searches, 7,200 people are looking for answers on how to fix dry winter skin this month.

The skin’s primary function is to protect the body against the external environment as well as preventing water loss. Cells around this produce lipids (oils) such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids to keep the skin feeling moist, but during the winter months less of these are produced, making the skin more susceptible to dryness.

For those who want to keep their skin in the best condition this winter, founder of New Nordic Karl Kristian, has recommended five important tips to follow:

Shield your skin as much as possible

There are a number of different ways to protect your skin during winter. If your skin is already dry or feels itchy, using thicker creams will help to lock moisture in. If you apply a moisturiser often during the day, try swapping your lotion to a cream and massaging it into your skin for 30 seconds to maximise its effects. Don’t forget that SPF shouldn’t just be used during summer either. The sun’s rays are powerful all the time and even though it might be cold, if the sun is out all day it can cause harm to your body.

Hydrate appropriately

When it’s cold outside we often fail to remember to drink enough water throughout the day, but this is just when low humidity is most likely to take the moisture out of our skin. Drink often and slowly throughout the day rather than gulping large quantities at once. To make it easier, indulge in hot drinks like water based hot chocolates or green tea which contains anti-oxidants as this is a wonderful way to keep your skin as hydrated as possible.

Don’t stay in the bath or shower for too long

During winter a long hot bath or shower may sound attractive but your skin will be much better-served with a five to 10 minute lukewarm cleanse. Hot water removes the skin’s natural oils quickly, so having a lengthy rinse can leave the skin extremely dry, diminishing natural moisture. After going to the toilet, wash your hands in cooler water as this is as effective at removing germs as boiling water and is less irritating to skin.

Protect your skin at night

While you sleep at night, it’s a good opportunity to nourish your skin with products to sink in as you rest. A facial oil will lock in moisture without leaving the skin feeling greasy. Rosehip oil is especially effective for rehydrating and healing.

Wrap up properly outside

A winter climate can be tough on your skin when going for a snowy walk or even travelling about shopping. Remember to wrap yourself up properly with a scarf and gloves when outside to protect your hands and neck. If your clothes get wet you should remove them immediately to prevent irritating the skin. Don’t neglect lip balm for your lips either as this will lead to chapped lips instantly.

Amy Loader of New Nordic commented: “It’s imperative to look after your skin all year round and winter poses some of the greatest challenges due to the harsh temperatures and often horrible weather. It is likely that dry skin will cause the biggest problems so introducing natural moisturisers that bring a soft feel into your routine will benefit you which our Pigment Clear Cream coupled with other products from this range is great at doing.”
