How to prevent wasps taking over your garage
A garages expert has issued a warning that wasps are in the process of taking over garages throughout June and July.
Council pest control figures have previously shown that over half of pest callouts (59%) are due to wasp infestations.
Alastair Mayne, CEO at electric garage door experts Garolla, says that wasps frequently target quiet garages and roof spaces quickly in June and July - meaning that UK homeowners need to act now if they have a problem.
Luckily, a small £5 natural scent bottle could be enough to help remedy the problem.
Why do wasps peak in June and July?
Small wasp nests typically start in April and May, when they will find a quiet and suitable location.
Nesting then ramps up significantly in June and July, when homeowners will realise they have significant problem.
Mr Mayne said: “Garages, sheds and roof edges can all appeal to wasps because they offer quiet shelter and are often left undisturbed for long periods. Early in the season, nests can be tiny and easy to miss, but by mid to late summer they can grow quickly if activity goes unnoticed.
“If you see wasps repeatedly moving in and out of the same gap, corner or roof edge, that is usually a sign of an active nest nearby and not something to ignore. It is worth checking rooflines, vents and frames for access points, but people should never poke, spray or try to knock down a nest themselves once activity is established, as that is when the risk of stings rises sharply.”
When are they worst, what damage can they cause, and what could it cost?
“As colonies grow, they can reach thousands of wasps, increasing the risk of stings and making garages, rooflines and wall cavities difficult to access safely.
“The biggest risk comes when a nest is disturbed rather than from simply seeing one in passing, which is why suspected nests should never be tackled without expert help. Professional wasp nest removal typically costs between £75 and £200+, depending on the size and location of the nest.”
What’s the best natural way to deter wasps from your home?
“Strong scents such as small £5 bottles of peppermint oil, citronella or eucalyptus can help deter wasps from settling nearby. Keeping sugary food and drink covered and removing fallen fruit from gardens can also reduce attraction, especially during peak summer months.
“However, when it comes to hornets, particularly larger species, deterrents are less reliable once activity has started. If you notice repeated movement in and out of the same spot, it is best to avoid disturbing them and seek professional advice rather than trying to handle it yourself.”
Top 7 ways to make your home and garage less attractive to pests this summer
Alastair says there are a few simple habits that can make a big difference:
- Keep garage doors shut when not in use
- Check seals, thresholds and small gaps around garage doors and vents
- Keep bins closed, clean and away from entrances where possible
- Do not leave pet food, bird seed or sweet drinks in garages or outdoor spaces
- Fix leaks, damp patches and standing water quickly
- Store items off the floor and reduce cardboard or cluttered hiding spots
- Clear food waste, spillages and fallen fruit before smells build up
Alastair added: “While different pests are drawn in by different things, the common thread is usually the same: easy access to food, moisture and shelter. In summer, even small oversights such as an overflowing bin, standing water or a gap around the garage can be enough to make a property far more appealing.
“Most pest problems start with simple things people overlook, like a door left open, clutter building up, or a space that is not being kept clean, dry and sealed properly. A few quick checks now can go a long way in keeping homes, garages and gardens less inviting over the summer.”
